Just got back from a week in Mexico City where my $12 gamble paid off big time
I was there last week and decided to try something I read online but didn't fully believe. Instead of buying a tourist card for the metro, I got a regular local card for about 30 pesos and loaded it with 200 pesos (roughly $12). For that whole week, I used it on the metro, buses, and even the cable car to get to a viewpoint. It worked everywhere and I never spent more on transport. The best part was taking the bus to the pyramids for basically nothing compared to a tour. I felt like I cracked the city's code lol. Has anyone else found a stupidly cheap local transit pass that saved their trip?

Wait, isn't that just the normal metro card? I thought tourists could buy those too, it's not a secret local hack.

Totally did the same thing in Lisbon with their Viva Viagem card. Loaded it up with a weekly pass for maybe 20 euros and rode every tram, metro, and funicular without thinking twice. Felt like a genius avoiding those overpriced tourist transport tickets they try to sell you at the airport. The best was taking the train out to Sintra for basically the cost of a coffee.
