Spent 6 months blaming my receiver for muddy dialogue until I moved my center speaker 4 inches
For half a year I kept turning the center channel up and messing with EQ because voices in movies sounded like they were coming through a pillow. Last weekend I finally pulled the speaker off the shelf inside my TV stand and set it on top, right at the front edge. The difference hit me in about 10 seconds of the opening scene of Heat on Blu-ray. The speaker was sitting about 8 inches back in a cubby, bouncing half its sound off the wood and glass before it ever reached my ears. Anyone else here mount their center channel inside furniture and think the problem was the gear? Curious how you fixed it without drilling holes in a rental.
Same thing happened to me in my last place, the center was stuffed in one of those IKEA cubes and I blamed my old receiver for like a year. Pulled it out and sat it on top of the stand and it was night and day, all that boxy echo was just the cabinet eating the sound. Cheap fix too, I just got some of those rubber feet and a small foam wedge to angle it up a bit toward the couch so it wasn't firing at my knees. For a rental you can use the 3M command strips or those little velcro squares to keep it from sliding, no holes needed. If it has to stay inside something, at least pull it flush to the front edge so it's not bouncing off the back wall.
