My foreman told me to stop soaking bricks before laying them, and he was dead right

I argued with him for 20 minutes on a job in Tulsa last month because every old-timer I know says you gotta soak them first. Turns out our supplier switched to a lower absorption brick and the soak was actually making the mortar slide around, so now I'm wondering how many other 'rules' I've been following that don't apply to the materials we use now.
