Burned my first loaf in 3 years at a cabin in Tahoe

I've been baking bread at home for a while, but last month I took my starter to a rental cabin near Tahoe and the oven there ran about 50 degrees hotter than the dial said. My usual 20 minute bake turned into a hockey puck in 12 minutes. I didn't bring my thermometer because I figured a cabin oven was fine. Now I always toss a cheap oven thermometer in my bag even for short trips, and I actually check it before preheating anywhere unfamiliar. Has anyone else had a surprise like that with a rental or borrowed oven?
