Unpopular opinion: drowning my orchid in ice cubes fixed it after 8 months of nothing

I killed two phals by fussing over them with a spray bottle, so I gave up and just dropped 3 ice cubes on the roots every Sunday. Six weeks later in my kitchen in Tucson it shot out two new leaves and a spike. Anyone else have a plant that only got happy once you basically ignored it?
