Just realized I was underwatering my ferns for 3 years

I had my Boston fern in a hanging basket by the south window, giving it a cup of water every Saturday like clockwork. Then my neighbor from the plant shop said the leaves were turning crispy because I was only wetting the top inch while the root ball stayed dry. Anyone else make this same mistake or am I the only one who didn't check the soil depth?

South facing is actually way too much light for a Boston fern too.
