Hit 1,000 welds on one job in Gary and it got me thinking about quality vs speed
I was working a big project at the BP refinery in Gary, Indiana last month and somehow cranked out 1,000 welds on a single pressure vessel job. Some guys say you should never rush past a certain number per day, but I was averaging 25 solid passes and only had 2 rejects. Do you guys focus more on hitting a high count or are you all about slowing down no matter what the foreman says? Curious how others balance it when the schedule is tight.

You mentioned 2 rejects out of 1,000 and that's exactly the problem right there. Two failed welds on a pressure vessel at a refinery is two too many when you're talking about that kind of heat and pressure day after day. Slow down and stop worrying about what the foreman wants because one bad weld in the wrong spot can shut the whole plant down and get someone hurt.
