Unpopular opinion: losing at game night at my buddy Dale's place in Akron taught me more than winning ever did
I got crushed in Wingspan 3 weeks in a row at Dale's kitchen table, and instead of getting mad I started writing down what the winner did each round. Turns out my whole problem was hoarding birds early instead of building a food engine, and the notebook showed it clear as day by game 4. Now I actually finish my engine by round 2 more often than not, which felt impossible back then. Anyone else keep a little log of their games, or am I the only weirdo doing homework for board games?
Keeping a log is a smart move and you're not the only one doing it. I started jotting notes after my fourth straight loss at Catan and it was eye opening, mainly that I was spending too much on roads when nobody was even racing me for longest road. For Wingspan try writing down your first 3 moves each game, since that's where most people either set up or fall behind. A cheap spiral notebook next to the board works fine, nothing fancy needed.
