That stat about how many new board games come out each year broke my brain a little
I was poking around BoardGameGeek's stats page after a game night at my friend's place in Denver and I saw something like 3,000 to 4,000 new games get listed there every single year now, versus maybe a few hundred back in the early 2000s. I sat there doing the math and realized even if I played one new game a week, which I definitely do not, I could not keep up with a tiny slice of that. It made me feel way less bad about my shelf of shame, which sits at around 14 unplayed boxes right now. It also made me think about how a ton of these games probably never get played by more than a few hundred people before they disappear. I keep seeing the same designers get hyped and the smaller stuff gets buried so fast, and honestly it kinda bums me out because some of my favorites are from tiny publishers. My group usually picks a game and sticks with it for weeks, so we are for sure part of the problem lol. How do you all decide what is actually worth trying when there is this much coming out?
