My wife, who never plays, said our game nights feel like a club with a secret language, and it made me realize we might be shutting people out.

We were setting up Scythe for a 5-player game last Friday and she asked what a 'mech' was, and when three of us started talking over each other to explain, she just smiled and said that.

Ever think about having a dedicated "explainer" for new players? One person handles the rules for that night, no talking over each other. It makes the first game way less of a wall of words. Your wife nailed the exact problem.

My old D&D group had the same problem with jargon, honestly. It's like every hobby builds its own little wall without meaning to.
