Had to pick between teaching a newbie or playing with my usual crew last Friday

So I brought my friend Mike to game night, he's never played anything beyond Monopoly. I had to choose between running a simple game with him or jumping into a 4-hour Eclipse session with my regular group. I picked teaching him Ticket to Ride because I felt bad lol. He actually got into it after the first round, but then he tried to build a route through a tunnel he didn't own and got all confused. Has anyone else had a newbie totally mess up a basic rule and still have fun anyway?

Right, but like did he just assume nobody would notice or did he think the tunnel was abandoned? That's the part I'm trying to figure out because there's no way you just start digging without checking who owns the land above you. Especially if it's a public tunnel or something that connects to other infrastructure. Was there a legal fight about it after or did the owner just find out and shut it down?
