DAE think 'gateway game' advice is backwards? I used to push Catan on new players, now I start with something meaner
For 2 years I'd hand new folks Catan or Ticket to Ride because that's what everyone says to do, but half of them never came back for a second night at our Thursday group here in Sacramento. Last fall I started throwing them straight into a quick round of Skull or Coup instead, and 7 of the last 9 new people stuck around for another session. Curious if anyone else skips the friendly stuff and just shows people a bluffing game on night one?

Man that line about half of them never coming back for a second night hits home. We had the same thing at our Tuesday meetup in Fresno, folks would play Catan once, smile, and then ghost us. Once I started leading with Love Letter or Coup, something short where you actually have to read the table and lie a little, new people got way more into it. Nine out of twelve sticking around is a wild jump though, glad it worked for your group.
