A guy at my local game night said he rates games before he even plays them, and I can't decide if he's a genius or a menace
So this guy Dave, who I've played with at the Tuesday meetup in Sacramento for about a year, drops this on me while we're packing up Ark Nova around 10pm. He says he can look at a box, read the back, skim the rulebook for 5 minutes, and know his rating within half a point. He claims he's been doing it for 2 years and he's never been off by more than one number. I laughed at first, but then he pulled up his phone and showed me his BGG account, and honestly the dude has ratings logged for 30 games he's never actually played. Here's the thing that bugged me: half his top ten are games that get torn apart in every review thread I've read. Makes me wonder if he's just guessing and getting lucky, or if there's some real pattern I'm missing. I've been the guy who plays a game 4 or 5 times before I even rate it, and now I feel slow. Is rating without playing a real skill, or is Dave just gaming the system so his profile looks stacked?
