Just learned only 18 percent of block parties in my city get permits, and I get why
I was at the city clerk's office in Dayton last Tuesday trying to get a permit for our August block party, and the lady behind the counter said only about 18 percent of block parties here even bother filing the paperwork. She said most folks just put up the barricades and hope nobody calls. I get it now, because the form asked for a $25 fee, two weeks notice, and a signed note from every single neighbor on the street. Back in the 90s when I was a kid, our parents just dragged the grills into the road and that was that. We ended up doing the permit anyway, but I'm wondering if anyone else has skipped it and what actually happened. Did a cop show up, or did the whole thing go off without a hitch?
