Turned up the forge to 2600F on a leaf spring knife and watched the grain grow like foam, now I check every single blade with a magnet before quench | Blacksmiths - The Community Guide
A buddy of mine cooked a batch of 1084 last summer and swore the magnet told him everything was fine, quenched the whole stack, and every single one snapped like a saltine on the snap test. Turns out he was checking with a fridge magnet that was too weak to read right. He switched to a decent sized one on a string and started checking three spots along the blade, tip, middle, and near the tang, and his break rate dropped to almost nothing. That magnet trick is only as good as the magnet you use and where you put it. Sounds like you already learned that lesson the hard way with that leaf spring.
