Every new guy at the shop keeps quenching 1095 in water and wondering why it cracks
I've had three helpers in the last two months come in and dunk 1095 in the water bucket like it's 1084, and every blade comes out with a crack down the edge or a warp you can't fix. The reason it matters is that 1095 needs a fast oil at most, or a proper interrupted quench, because water shocks the martensite too hard and that thin edge just gives up. I know this because my first knife in 2019 was 1095, went straight into the slack tub, and popped before I could even get it to the temper oven. So what are you all running for 1095 these days, parks 50 or something slower, and are you doing a full dunk or a three second pull?
