Coal vs. propane forge for a weekend shop, which way did you go?
I finally had enough of hauling my gear to the local makerspace, so I priced out a small setup for my garage. A coal forge with a hand crank blower ran about $450 used, but the propane route with a regulator and burner was closer to $700 new. I went with coal because it was cheaper upfront and I liked the idea of traditional heat control, but after 5 weekends of ash cleanup and smoke in the neighborhood, I'm wondering if I made the call for the wrong reasons. Does anyone else run a tiny forge like this, and do you regret skipping the gas option for quick jobs?
