Spent $60 on a cheap pannier bag and regretted it every rainy morning

I figured I'd save some cash and bought a no-name pannier off Amazon last year, but after three months the waterproof coating peeled off and my work clothes got soaked twice. Has anyone else found a decent bag under $100 that actually holds up in a downpour?

Waterproof coatings on cheap bags are a straight up scam. They always fail after a few months because the material can't actually handle constant moisture. Look for a pannier made of welded PVC or heavy duty nylon with a sealed seam, not that spray-on garbage. Ortlieb is the gold standard for a reason but you could check out Ibera or Roswheel if you want to stay under $100. Those brands actually use real waterproof materials instead of relying on that coating.

Has anyone else had a bag where the coating started peeling off in weird little flakes? I bought a cheap one last year and after a few months it looked like it was molting, like a lizard or something. It was fine in dry weather but the second any rain hit, that coating just lifted right off and stuck to everything inside. I ended up with a soggy sandwich and a wet phone charger, which was a bad time. Now I just keep a trash bag in my bike basket as a backup, because apparently that's more reliable than the spray-on stuff.
