Wasted $80 on a fancy bottom bracket tool I never needed

I bought a Park Tool BBT-32 for my Shimano cranks because I thought I needed the special socket. Turns out a generic 8mm hex key and a plastic mallet would have done the same job for free. Has anyone else bought a niche tool they found out later was completely unnecessary?

Oh man, tell me about it. I did the exact same thing with a chain whip tool. Bought the Park Tool one for like 40 bucks thinking I needed the special handle and everything to take off a cassette. Then my buddy shows up, grabs an old chain and a pair of vise grips, and pops it right off. Felt like a total idiot. I swear these companies just love to make us think we need a dedicated widget for every little thing on a bike. Now I have a drawer full of one-use tools that gather dust. It's almost a rite of passage for anyone who works on their own bike.

Yeah @leo567, same here. I just use an old chain and a wrench now.
