Saw a guy at the co-op yesterday greasing his brake pads thinking it'd stop his squeal

He said his buddy told him to do it, and I had to stop him before he ended up needing new rotors too, has anyone else run into this kind of bad advice at a community shop?

I read a post on a cycling forum last year where a guy swore by putting some kind of cooking oil on his rotors to stop a squeak, like it was some sort of home remedy. He ended up having to replace the whole braking system, and it cost him way more than just new pads would have. It really shows how even well meaning advice from a friend can be totally wrong. The co-op likely has a basic maintenance guide or a volunteer who knows their stuff, so it's worth asking before trying anything like that.

Oh man, next time my brakes are noisy I'm gonna try butter instead maybe that'll finally fix it. People hear one thing from a buddy and suddenly they're inventing new ways to mess up their bike.
