Just realized my shop got faster after we banned the air compressor for a month
I know this sounds crazy but hear me out. Back in January my boss got tired of the noise and the moisture issues so he unplugged the big compressor in the corner of our shop in Spokane for what was supposed to be two days. It stayed off for almost five weeks. At first we all hated it. Hand pumps for tires, no impact gun for bottom brackets, no blow gun for drying frames. But something weird happened by week two. Our average repair ticket time dropped from about 50 minutes to around 38 minutes and I think I know why. Half the stuff we were blasting with air didn't need it, and the impact gun was letting us skip the feel part of tightening. Without it we actually used torque wrenches every time and stopped rounding out alloy bolts. We also stopped blowing grease and dirt into bearings on every single tune up. When the compressor came back on we kept it unplugged for bigger jobs and just ran a small portable one for tires. Has anyone else noticed their crew getting sloppy with air tools and not realizing it until they had to do it by hand?
