Just realized my homemade chain cleaner trick was making things worse
For about 2 years I ran my chains through a jar of diesel and a wire brush because an old timer at the shop on 5th street swore by it. Last week I picked up a cheap Park Tool chain checker and it showed my 3 month old chain was already at 0.75 wear on a bike that barely sees rain. I tore everything down and found grit packed in behind the rollers, the diesel was just pushing it deeper instead of flushing it out. Switched to a proper citrus degreaser and a rag soak and the same drivetrain has stayed quiet for 3 weeks now. Kicking myself for how many chains I burned through with that old method, has anyone else had a shortcut backfire like that?
