The great clipper oil debate: mineral oil vs. the fancy stuff

I keep seeing barbers at the shop next to mine using those expensive, scented clipper oils. I've been using plain mineral oil for 15 years, ever since my mentor in Tampa showed me. He said it's just about lubrication and preventing rust, nothing more. The other side says the premium oils last longer and protect the blades better. What's the real difference, and is it worth the extra five bucks a bottle?

Ever notice how those fancy oils are always sold by the same people who sell the clippers? I used to buy the expensive stuff too until I realized my clippers from 2008 are still running fine on mineral oil. The trick is to wipe the blades clean and re-oil them after every few cuts, not just when they sound bad. That gunk buildup happens if you let any oil, cheap or not, sit there and collect hair. Save your five bucks.

Man, I gotta go the other way on this. Your mentor was wrong, plain and simple. Mineral oil breaks down fast and gets gunky. I switched to a good clipper oil and my blades stay cooler and the motor doesn't sound as strained. That five bucks means my expensive clippers might last years longer. It's not just about smell, it's about the actual stuff protecting the metal.
