Had a disaster week with my pepper plants
Last June I was so proud of my balcony peppers. Then a heatwave hit and I lost 4 plants in 2 days. I used to think more sun was always better. My neighbor showed me how her shade cloth saved her tomatoes. Now I keep a 40% shade cloth ready for July. Anyone else get caught off guard by sudden heat on their balcony?

Oh MAN, I feel this in my soul! I had the exact same thing happen with my balcony peppers last summer. I was so proud of them and then BAM, three days of scorching heat and they all wilted like sad little rags. I learned the hard way that afternoon sun on a balcony is basically a magnifying glass roasting those plants. Now I use a 40% shade cloth too, but I also moved all my pots off the concrete and onto wooden slats. That concrete was HEATING UP like a frying pan and cooking the roots from below. I also started watering deeper but less often so the roots grow down where it's cooler. It feels counterintuitive but my peppers are way happier now when the heat hits.

Oh, this really hits home. I used to think a sun-blasted balcony was the best thing for peppers since they're "heat lovers," but watching them crisp up taught me different. Your neighbor's shade cloth tip and the wooden slats idea are exactly the kind of practical wisdom I needed to hear.
