Used pine shavings for 2 years, switched to sand last March, now I can't decide which is better
Honestly I ran pine shavings in my 8x10 coop for about 2 years and just dealt with the smell and the weekly rake outs. Then last March I dumped in 400 lbs of washed construction sand because a guy at the feed store in Boise swore by it, and scooping poop with a kitty litter scoop is way faster. But now the sand gets nasty when it rains and the girls track it everywhere, plus it was $60 upfront and heavy as heck to haul. The shavings crowd says it composts better in the run and stays softer under their feet in winter. The sand crowd says no smell and no mites. I'm honestly torn because both have real downsides. Which one are you all running and why?
