Can we talk about how chick grit is NOT the same as the stuff for adult hens?
I ignored the advice to buy two different sizes and gave my 5 week old chicks the adult grit last Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning one of them was walking around all puffed up and weird. I felt terrible and called a feed store in Boise, the guy there said the bigger stones can sit in a chick's crop and block everything up. I mixed a tiny bit of olive oil into warm mash and kept her separate for 2 days, and she finally pooped it out. So yeah, the "just use what you have" crowd online is wrong, spend the $6 on the chick size. Did anyone else learn this the hard way?
