After 4 months of free-ranging, I finally built a covered run and wish I'd done it sooner
Lost 3 hens to a hawk last Tuesday and spent the whole week reinforcing the coop with hardware cloth, so now I'm wondering if anyone else waited too long to add predator-proofing and what finally pushed you to do it?

Yeah I put off building a proper run for way too long thinking my girls would be fine with just free ranging during the day. Then a fox got two of my best layers in broad daylight and that was it. I ended up digging a trench and burying hardware cloth a foot deep around the whole perimeter cause those things will dig under anything. The covered run is a pain to clean but beats finding feathers everywhere.
