The old guy at Cascade Pass gave me the best shortcut advice I've ever ignored
Stopped to chat with a retired ranger near the switchbacks at mile 6 and he told me to skip Sahale Arm entirely and take the unmarked cattle trail down the east ridge, and even though I didn't listen and hit 4 miles of loose scree instead, I still think about that route every time I'm planning a trip up there has anyone actually tried that scramble?
My buddy Dave tried that east ridge route two summers back after some guy at the trailhead told him the same thing. He said the first quarter mile was fine, just grass and a faint path, then it turned into a mess of downed trees and rock slabs. Took him three hours to go about a mile and a half, and he came out with his shins all cut up from pushing through brush. He still swears the view from the top made it worth it, but he also said he would never do it again. Some of those old ranger shortcuts were probably fine 30 years ago before everything grew in.
