Lightweight trail runners vs my old boots on the JMT, and my feet made the call for me
I always figured boots were the safe pick for a long thru hike, so I laced up my heavy pair for the first 40 miles of the John Muir Trail out of Happy Isles. By day three my heels had hot spots the size of quarters and I was stopping every hour to mess with socks and tape. My buddy was in cheap mesh trail runners and just kept cruising past me on the downhills without a care. I switched at Red's Meadow, same shoes as him basically, and the blisters stopped forming by day five. Lost about a pound and a half per foot too, which I felt way more on the climbs than I expected. Now I'm second guessing boots for anything with real mileage, but I know people swear by ankle support on scree. Did switching to trail runners ever backfire on you on a rocky route?
