DAE think open transport is always the way to go? A guy at a truck stop in Amarillo flipped my whole view
Two weeks ago I was dead set on open carriers for everything, cheaper price, quicker pickup, done. Then I got stuck at a Pilot outside Amarillo waiting on a driver and started talking to an older guy hauling for a broker out of Lubbock. He walked me through his last run, an 800 mile trip with a brand new Tahoe on top of the rack, and showed me pics of the rock chips and one cracked windshield he had to eat because the shipper skipped enclosed. He said the $600 he saved up front cost him $1,100 in repairs and a mad customer. I had a 2021 Silverado booked open for my brother's move to Phoenix and I called the broker the next morning to switch to enclosed for $1,340 instead of $740. Still not sure I made the right call on the money, so what do you all do for a truck that nice?
Did that guy ever say how often he actually hauls cars, or is he just going off one bad run? Half the chips and cracks on open loads happen when the driver is lazy about strap placement, not because the trailer had no walls. I've done plenty of open runs on nice trucks and never paid a dime in damage, so paying double up front for one story from a truck stop seems like a lot.
