I borrowed my brother's open utility trailer for a 400 mile move two summers ago and it rained the whole first day. My couch looked like a wet dog by the time I got to the new place, and my box spring was toast. A tarp helps but wind rips them loose at highway speeds, which I learned about 60 miles in. The money I saved on the rental went right back out the door buying new furniture. If I did it again I would just pay for the enclosed one and sleep easy.
