One comment about star trailing fixed my whole workflow

I've been shooting wide field nightscapes for about two years now, mostly around Flagstaff. I always thought my 15 second exposures at 24mm were fine, but someone on another forum pointed out that my stars were slightly egg shaped on the edges. They said to try the 500 rule divided by crop factor, then subtract a third. I switched to 8 seconds and ISO 3200 instead of my usual 1600, and the difference was night and day. The stars are pinpoints now, even at 100% zoom, and the extra noise cleans up fine with stacking. It cost me nothing, just had to redo a few nights of data I'd already shot. Has anyone else had a simple rule like that completely change how they shoot?
