Overheard a coworker say 'ask me anything' wrong and now I can't stop thinking about it
At lunch on Tuesday in the break room, my coworker Dave told a story and ended it with 'so you can ask me anything about that, I guess.' He meant the opposite, like he was warning us not to ask too many questions. It made me realize how much tone changes that phrase. I've been noticing people say 'ask anything' in weird ways all week since, mostly as a dare or a fake invite. Has anyone else caught a phrase like that where the meaning flips based on context?
