Vent: That volunteer dig supervisor who shushed me over a Roman coin fragment
I was on a community dig outside Bath two summers ago and bent down to pick up a tiny piece of pottery that looked like a coin rim, but the supervisor snapped at me to stop touching things before I could even check it with my fingers. He gave me a whole lecture about proper protocol in front of twenty people, but then later admitted the piece was probably just a modern bottle cap anyway. Has anyone else run into a site boss who got way too strict about small stuff and killed the excitement for new volunteers?

The "lecture in front of twenty people" part is what would've sent me packing right then.

Twenty people watching that lecture? I would have started taking a bow, personally, since he clearly wanted an audience for his little performance. Nothing kills the fun of finding old junk faster than someone acting like you cracked the Rosetta Stone with a bottle cap.
