Just learned the Antikythera mechanism had at least 30 bronze gears and I can't stop thinking about it
I was reading a piece on the Smithsonian site about the shipwreck off Antikythera, a Greek island, and the writer mentioned the device has at least 30 hand cut bronze gears packed into a box about the size of a shoebox. Sponge divers pulled it up in 1901 and it took researchers most of a century to figure out it was basically an astronomy calculator for predicting eclipses and planet positions. What got me was that nothing this complex shows up again in the record for over a thousand years, which seems wild for something someone actually built. Has anyone seen the replica at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, and does it make more sense in person?
