Got chewed out by a senior arborist for leaving too much stub on a maple cut

Last month I was working a big removal in Portland and the guy overseeing me pointed out I was leaving 3 inch stubs on every limb, said it was lazy and bad for the tree's long term health. He made me recut every single one flush to the collar and now I check every cut twice before moving on. Anyone here have a habit that took getting yelled at to finally break?

Got chewed out by a senior arborist" - same thing happened to me until I started cutting right at the branch bark ridge every time.
