Warning: my neighbor in Portland got me into bokashi with a 5 gallon bucket and now I'm hooked
My neighbor in Portland dropped off a 5 gallon bucket with a Gamma lid and a bag of bran last Tuesday and gave me the quick run down on her porch. She keeps hers under the kitchen sink and empties it every 2 weeks, and she swears the tea she drains off is what keeps her balcony tomatoes alive. I'm only 3 weeks in and my bucket smells like pickles instead of garbage, so is that normal or am I doing something off?
Did your neighbor's bucket ever smell like pickles when you first started? Because mine is doing the same thing and I keep reading that sour or vinegar smells mean too much moisture or the bran is getting used up faster than the food. In my case I think I was dumping wet coffee grounds in without adding extra bran to soak it up, so now I stir a handful in every time and it cuts the smell way down. Under the sink with the lid on tight for two weeks is a long time though, so if hers really sits that long without going bad I want to know her trick.
