My countertop bin got a 4-star review from my neighbor, and she was right
I used to think any airtight bin worked for apartment composting, but my neighbor in unit 3B called mine a 'smell box' after I bragged about my setup. She pointed out that without a carbon filter in the lid, my banana peels and coffee grounds were basically fermenting for a week before I dropped them at the community site on 5th Street. I switched to a bin with a charcoal filter and started freezing scraps in a paper bag until transfer day, and honestly the difference is huge. Anyone else get pushback on their bin choice and then change their whole routine over it?

The "fermenting for a week" part is real but the carbon filter isn't what's fixing it, hate to say it. Charcoal filters mostly just trap smells that already made it out of the bin, they don't stop the rot happening inside. The freezing is the actual hero here, since cold temps stop the bacteria that break scraps down and make that funk in the first place. I did the same flip as you, filter lid and all, and then forgot to freeze one week and wow, the filter did almost nothing. Not saying toss the filtered bin, it helps with the little bit that escapes, but the freezer is doing the heavy lifting.
