Bought a $40 countertop composter and it smells like a wet dog in my kitchen

I grabbed one of those little electric composters off Amazon last month, thought it would be a game changer for my studio apartment. It was the Lomi brand, $400 on sale but I went with a cheaper knockoff for $40. After three uses the motor started grinding weird and the lid doesn't seal right anymore so fruit flies got in. Anyone else try a budget composter and regret it, or did I just pick a dud brand?

Oh boy, that smell you described really took me back. I once bought a little $30 countertop composter from some brand I'd never heard of, and by day three my whole kitchen smelled like a barnyard. I tried everything - baking soda, lemon peels, even a tiny charcoal filter I taped on the side. Nothing worked. The motor was so loud it shook my counter and scared my cat. I finally just threw the whole thing in the trash and went back to my old method of keeping a little bin in the freezer and taking it to the community garden. Sometimes the cheap stuff is just not worth the hassle, no matter how good the reviews are on Amazon.
