Old clock shop owner's take on time made me rethink my collecting

Last Saturday in Portland, a guy who repairs grandfather clocks told me people buy them for the wrong reason, they want the tick to feel busy, not to actually tell time. He said he's taken apart 200+ clocks and the overpriced ones are always the most neglected. Has anyone else gotten a reality check from a dealer or repair person that changed what you look for?
