Heads up about that old mercury glass mirror at Goodwill on 12th St
I stopped by the Goodwill on 12th St in Portland yesterday and nearly grabbed a beautiful 1920s mirror for $45, but when I flipped it over the backing was crumbling and pieces of the reflective coating were flaking off onto the floor. That gray dust is mercury and it's seriously toxic, especially if you have kids or pets around and they touch it. Has anyone else seen these damaged vintage mirrors sitting out in plain reach at thrift stores around town?

That's a really good catch, and honestly kind of scary. Goodwill should know better than to put something like that out where anyone can grab it, especially with all the families that come through there. I've seen a few of those old mirrors at estate sales too, and people just don't realize how dangerous the loose backing can be. The dust gets everywhere and it's not like you can just wipe it up safely. Good on you for checking the back before buying, a lot of folks wouldn't think to do that. Did you end up telling a staff member about it, or did you just leave it be?
