Why does nobody talk about the old USGS topo maps for finding abandoned roads?

I spent a couple years trying to find old logging roads in New Hampshire using modern GPS and satellite images. Always came up short. Then a guy at a historical society told me to look at the 1950s era USGS quads. The difference is night and day. Those maps show trails and roads that just vanish from newer editions. Found three lost access points in one weekend. Has anyone else had luck with dated government maps for this kind of thing?

Ha! Nothing like mapping out a ghost road to nowhere. Just don't tell me you followed it all the way to a dead end and found a mailbox.
