Old county lines versus modern GPS, the 1845 map won for me

I was trying to find a vanished village near Roanoke, Virginia that my great-grandpa mentioned, so I pulled up a scanned 1845 plat map and my phone's GPS at the same time. The antique map had the old creek bends and church site that matched fence lines still in the soil, but the GPS just showed a blank field with no clues. Has anyone else had better luck using century-old boundary maps over current tools for tracking down lost places?
