Hot take: county boundary lines on 1890s US maps are more accurate than the fancy atlas reproductions everyone loves
I spent 14 months last year trying to pin down the original 1889 boundary between two townships near Peoria, Illinois, because every modern reprinted atlas I checked had the line shifted about a quarter mile east. Turns out the crude county survey map I pulled from a local historical society scan was dead on, and the pretty $80 reprint everyone swears by just copied a later 1912 correction without saying so. Has anyone else run into a cheap or ugly original map beating a reprint on actual border accuracy?

That "1912 correction" thing is real but plenty of reprints just scan bad copies, not intentional edits.
