Found a 1744 map at a garage sale in Dubuque for $3 and the spelling of "Illinois" sent me down a 2 hour rabbit hole
The river was labeled "Riviere des Illinois" but someone had penciled "Ilinoys" in the margin, and now I'm wondering if that was a real variant spelling or just a bored owner messing around, so has anyone else run into weird handwritten corrections on old French colonial maps?
