Why do so many guys still tape off recessed door contacts with cheap painter's tape?
Back when I started doing installs in Phoenix around 2008, the old timer I trained under would spend 10 minutes on every recessed contact making sure the hole was clean and the magnet gap was set right. These days I see guys slap a contact in and cover it with the cheapest blue painter's tape they can find, then wonder why they get callbacks 6 months later when the tape dries up and peels off. I know it matters because I went back and fixed 14 doors at a property in Tempe last month, and every single one had that same crusty tape jammed in the gap. I just use a dab of clear silicone now and I have not had a call back on a door contact in over 2 years. What are you all using to seal yours up?
