Spent 20 minutes digging through a panel because the homeowner renumbered everything themselves
Got a service call last Tuesday in a 1990s split-level. Customer said the zone list was on the panel. Opened it up and someone had taken a sharpie and relabeled all the zones as 1 through 8 in neat handwriting. Problem was none of those numbers matched the actual wiring on the board. Took me a solid 20 minutes to trace every single wire back to figure out which zone was which. Has anyone else dealt with homeowners doing their own labeling that makes zero sense?

People do this with everything now, not just electrical panels. My son-in-law "organized" the spice cabinet by putting all the jars in alphabetical order, but he mixed up the labels on the bottoms so oregano was actually cumin. It took me three tries to make chili that didn't taste wrong. I think folks watch those home improvement shows and get the idea they can fix things up themselves, but they skip the part where you have to actually know what you're doing first. It's like when my neighbor put new numbers on her mailbox but copied them backward from the house across the street. A little knowledge can sure cause a lot of extra work for the next person.
