Just realized my worst install story is the one I keep telling at every job site
A guy I was training last week asked why I always check the garage door sensor twice before I leave, and I told him about the house in Plano where I wired everything perfect and the homeowner's cat set off the motion detector at 2am on a Tuesday. He laughed and said his old boss made him do the same thing after a panel swap went sideways in '19. It hit me that we all carry around these little rituals from jobs that went bad, and mine came from a $400 callback I never wanted to repeat. Now I'm wondering how many of my habits are actually code and how many are just scars. What's the one check you never skip because a job burned you once?
Mine is checking every wire nut in a panel before I close it, and it comes from a 2018 job where I swore I twisted one tight but it popped loose three weeks later. Whole kitchen circuit dead, homeowner had a freezer full of meat in the garage. Cost me a Saturday and a lot of apologizing. Now I tug on every single one, even the ones I just did five minutes ago. It sounds dumb but I have not had a loose connection callback since.
