Can we talk about how hard it is to hide keypads in finished basements

Did a panel swap in a finished basement outside Cleveland last Friday and the homeowner wanted the keypad flush mounted next to their bar. No studs where we needed it, just drywall over cinder block. I tried the old pancake box trick but the depth was way off, ended up cutting a hole in the drywall, fishing a low voltage ring in with some sheet metal shims, and securing it with tapcons through the back. Took me nearly 2 hours for what should have been a 20 minute job. I compared that to another house we did with a stud right by the entry door and it was night and day. Makes me wonder if anyone here uses those surface mount slim keypads that stick out a quarter inch, do customers actually complain about them, or is messing with masonry just the standard move?
